Heights of Abraham & Bonsall -

16 February 2015

If a walk starts at Cromford, you can be certain that it is going to be hilly, and Royce’s walk to the Heights of Abraham was certainly not going to be an exception to this rule! Over 25 walkers met on this misty morning for a trek up the hills, but it was well-worth the climb, and the weather did lift enough at times for some glimpses of the magnificent views over the Derwent valley.

Starting from Cromford Meadows, we crossed the A6, and, passing through Cromford village, immediately started the climb into the woods. Following the ridge which runs alongside the A6 (far below us), we got the occasional glimpse of Matlock Bath through the trees and the mist. We passed one of the entrances to the Heights of Abraham, went under the route of the cable-car, then climbed again until we reached the top of the Heights. An ideal place to stop for lunch, with good views by now of Matlock and Riber Castle.

Then we went down the other side of the hill, moving away from Matlock, and descended into the village of Bonsall, with it’s picturesque church, and then completed the circle, returning to Cromford.
